How to copy, paste, and move files in macOS Finder with keyboard shortcuts

How to Cut and Paste Files

Starting with Lion, cut and paste is supported with keyboard shortcuts. However, it works a little differently from Windows. Windows uses a cut-then-paste flow, while Lion copies first and then either pastes or moves the file. On Mac, you have two choices.

The commands below are available only in Lion.

First copy with command + c, then paste with command + v or cut and paste by moving with command + option + v.

  1. Copy / Paste: command + c / command + v
  2. Copy / Move: command + c / command + option + v
