Blog

Blog

A blog (Blog or Weblog) is a website where posts are published for the purpose of sharing information or exchanging opinions. In other words, it is a kind of personal journal whose contents are frequently updated and made public so the general public can view them.

Originally, the term Weblog, a combination of Web and log (recorded data), first appeared in the United States in 1997, and the shortened word “Blog” became established. The “log” here refers to the data itself accumulated as a diary, meaning that “diaries posted on the web are accumulated day by day.”

Blogs generally strongly express the author’s personality or the purpose of the website. Topics covered in blogs usually consist of simple philosophical reflections, commentary on the Internet, and many other social issues, and links to sites preferred by the author may be added. The most important characteristic of a blog is that it takes the form of a magazine. New information is usually entered every day, and its style is characterized by not placing great importance on formality.

The author of a blog is usually called a “blogger.”

History of Blogs

The first blog in history was a diary-style website started in 1994 by Justin Hall (born December 16, 1974), and it was introduced in daily newspapers including The New York Times.

Early blogs were made simply with HTML and similar technologies, but blog software such as WordPress and LiveJournal soon appeared. In 2003, there was an event that helped popularize blogs: an Iraqi person advocated peace through a blog during the U.S.-U.K. coalition bombing of Baghdad.

In Korea, a blog user group called Weblog in Korea was created in December 2001, and Naver, Daum, and others launched blog services. Since then, blogs have taken their current form.

Types of Blogs

Blogs are divided into two types.

  • Hosted blogs
    • Services provided by large portal sites.
    • Naver, Tistory, and Brunch belong to this type.
  • Self-hosted blogs
    • A type of blog where users create a homepage, pay for web hosting, upload it online, and build it directly.
    • WordPress belongs to this type.
